Washington, D.C. — MFA announced today that Zach Gates has joined the association as Vice President, U.S. Government Affairs. Gates most recently served as Staff Director of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets. At MFA, Gates will work to advance policies that strengthen U.S. capital markets and enable alternative asset managers to raise capital and generate returns for their investors, including pensions, foundations, and endowments.
“Zach brings a strong understanding of both Capitol Hill and capital markets policy,” said Jillien Flores, MFA Chief Advocacy Officer. “His experience will strengthen MFA’s work to promote policies that help alternative asset managers finance businesses, improve market efficiency, and deliver returns that support retirees, students, and communities across the country.”
Prior to joining MFA, Gates spent nearly a decade in the House of Representatives working on U.S. capital markets and financial services policy. As Staff Director of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, he advised Republican members on securities regulation, capital formation, market structure, investment management, and corporate governance. Gates also held several policy roles for Capital Markets Subcommittee Chair Ann Wagner (R-MO).
“Zach understands how to successfully address complex policy issues via legislation and oversight,” said John Van Etten, MFA Managing Director, Head of U.S. Government Affairs. “He will make our team more effective as we work with Congress and the Administration to keep U.S. capital markets strong and competitive.”
Gates earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with a minor in Psychology, from The University of Alabama. He reports to Van Etten.
