Washington, D.C. — MFA issued the following statement in response to the IMF’s report on hedge funds and financial stability:
“The IMF rightly recognizes that hedge funds improve market functioning and help lower borrowing costs for governments and businesses. Hedge fund financing is subject to margin, collateral, and counterparty risk management, and U.S. and European regulators already collect detailed data on hedge fund leverage, exposures, and counterparties. Blunt, bank-like measures, such as leverage limits, and mandatory minimum haircuts would raise financing costs and reduce participation in critical markets—including sovereign debt markets—when it is needed most.” — Jillien Flores, MFA Chief Advocacy Officer
